ƒAlien Registration„
All non-Japanese staying in Japan must register within 90 days of arrival in Japan.
In order to register, you must fill out an gApplication for Alien Registrationh
and submit the application, 2 recently taken photos (4.5cm x 3.5cm) and your passport
to the municipal office in the district where you reside. The certificate will
take approximately two or three weeks to process. You have a legal obligation
to carry this certificate at all times. Please do not forget to take it with you
whenever you go out. ƒNational Health Insurance (NHI)„
All foreigners who intend to reside in Japan for more than 1 year must join the
NHI. Entry procedures are carried out by your local municipal office. After joining,
you will be issued a NHI Certificate. If you show this certificate at the reception
desk when you receive medical treatment, you will need to pay only 30% of the
incurred medical costs. ƒDormitories for International Students„
The University of Tokyo provides the following dormitories for international students:

Applications for these dormitories are accepted in January (for admission in Aprilj
and July (for admission in October), so please check the bulletin board carefully.
Applications for the Tokyo
International Exchange Center Residence Halls will also be posted on the bulletin
board around the same time.
Please submit applications to the International Student Adviser.
Information on other private dormitories will be provided on the bulletin board
as well.
EInformation of Accommodations
ƒComprehensive Renterfs Insurance for Foreign Students Studying
in Japan„
When renting an apartment, it is sometimes difficult for an international
student to find a guarantor. The University of Tokyo has a system whereby
the Head of the International Student Support Group acts as the guarantor,
provided that the student meets certain conditions. If you would like to
use this service, please apply to International Student Support Group (9:30-17:00, TEL: 03-5841-2515).
EUseful Tips To Find Housing in Japan ƒScholarship„
All scholarship application information is posted on the bulletin board, so please
check it carefully. Recruiting is especially concentrated between October and
April. For details, please refer to Scholarship
for Self-Supported students. ƒEnrollment Confirmation for receipt
of Scholarship„
EJapanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholars (KOKUHISEI) / Gakushu Shoureihi
Scholars
For confirmation of enrollment, the Scholars must provide their signature
each month within a specified term (usually within the first 3 days of
the month). By providing your signature on time, the scholarship allowance
will be transferred to your savings account within the month. For April
and October, the allowance will be transferred around the end of the month.
If you write your signature by the 26th of the month, your allowance will
be given around the the 17th of the next month.
If you do not come to write your signature from the 1st to the 26th of
the month, you will not receive any allowance for the month.

ƒCertificate of Scholarship„

Please apply to the International Student Adviser. A certificate will be issued
in approximately a week. ƒSchool Expenses & Applications for the
Exemption/Deferred Payment of School Expenses„
Tuition fees must be paid by bank transfer twice a year, in May and November.
Students with financial difficulties (except research students) may apply for
an exemption or deferral, which will be subject to review. For details, please
refer to the Student Scholarship and Welfare Group. ƒAnnual Health Checkup„
You must have an annual health checkup at the Hongo
Campus Health Service Center.
Especially for those applying to admission exams for the master/doctoral courses,
this health checkup is necessary. The schedule will be posted on the bulletin
board. ƒMedical Fee Reimbursement for International Students„
As of the last day of March 31, 2009, medical financial assistance by the
Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) is no longer available.
ƒChanging Address or Phone Number„
When you change your address or phone number, please be sure to inform the International
Student Adviser.
Within 14 days after changing your address, you must go in person to the municipal
office in the district where you now live and process the change to your Alien
Registration. At the same time, please process the changes to your National Health
Insurance. ƒTemporary Leave & Re-entry„
When you leave Japan temporarily or go for a domestic trip for more than a week,
you must submit to the office before leaving an gApplication for Temporary Leaveh(—·s“Í:Ryokoutodoke).
The form requires your adviserfs signature/stamp for approval.
Before leaving Japan, you must obtain a gRe-entry Permith from the relevant Immigration
Bureau. Without this permit, you may not be able to re-enter Japan according to
your schedule, as it will take more than a month to complete your re-entry procedures.

Permit Application ƒPart-time Job„
You must apply for and obtain a gpermit to engage in activities other than
those permitted by the status of residence previously grantedh (Ž‘ŠiŠOŠˆ“®‹–‰Â‘:Shikakugaikatsudoukyokasho)
prior to taking a part-time job. Please submit applications for the permit
to the International Student Adviser. After applying, a permit will be
issued in two to three weeks. When you extend your student visa, please
do not forget to reapply for the permit.
The maximum hours you are allowed to work at part-time job is 8 hours per day
during the summer, winter, and spring vacations, and 28 hours per week for all
other dates. ƒStudent Seasonal Train Pass & Student Discount Ticket„
Undergraduates and graduate students enrolled in the masterfs or doctorate courses
will be granted student discounts on student seasonal train passes. For details
about the discounts, please inquire at the railway company when you buy a pass
or ticket. Research students, who are not regular students, are not entitled to
use student seasonal train passes.
In addition to the train pass, international students can obtain a maximum of
10 student discount tickets (20% discount) are issued per year for travel on JR
for a one-way distance of 100 km or more. These are issued by an automatic issuing
machine available at the office. (except for research students) ƒExtension
of the Period of Residence (visa)„
This procedure involves filing visa applications at the relevant Immigration Bureau
before onefs authorized period of stay expires. Applications are usually accepted
2 months before the expiration date. You are advised to undergo this procedure
a little earlier than usual. Please be aware that during the months of March,
April, September and October, the Immigration Bureau is particularly busy. Please
ask the International Student Adviser for the necessary documents.
After your application for visa extension has been approved, please do not forget
to go to the city or ward office within 14 days, in order to revise your permitted
period of residence.
The gPermit to engage in activities other than those permitted by the status of
residence previously grantedh (Ž‘ŠiŠOŠˆ“®‹–‰Â‘:Shikakugaikatsudoukyokasho) must be renewed
as well.
ƒVisa Consulting Service„
This service is applying for "Extension of Period of Stay", "Change of Status of Residence", and "Certificate of Eligibility" for your family etc. instead of you. For details, please refer to Visa Consulting Service.
ƒWithdrawal from Research Student status / Decline of Japanese
Government Scholarship„
If you withdraw from research student status or decline from the Japanese Government
Scholarship for any reason whatsoever, please make sure to inform the International
Student Adviser as soon as you decide. ƒTutorial System„
In order to adapt to living in Japan, international students are assigned Japanese
students as tutors to help them improve their studies and research at the university.
To receive this service, the academic adviserfs request is necessary, and the
period is limited to one year after the international studentfs arrival in Japan.
(only for gStudent Visah holders) ƒAcademic Advice for International
Students„
This system is open for students who belong to the Graduate Schools for
Law and Politics and the Graduate School of Public Policy. If you all within
either of these categories, you can receive advice from current students
of the University of Tokyo in relation to your studies, for example, preparing
for seminar presentations, checking reports and theses, preparing for admission,
and teaching study methods etc.
You do not have to make a reservation. Please go to the advising room directly.

ƒExcursion„
A one night two day excursion is scheduled in the spring. Last year we
made a trip to Nikko. ƒSocial Studies Visit„
A social studies visit is planned in the autumn. We visit the Diet Building, the
Courts, the Prosecutors Office, and the Imperial Palace etc. ƒParty„
A party is scheduled in May, for international students, visiting professors,
visiting researches, and ICCLP research scholars. ƒJapanese
Language Study Group„
The Japanese Language Study Group is held every Thursday 12:00-13:00 at
B‚P seminar room, Faculty of Law & Letters Bldg.1.
The requested proficiency level is level 1 or 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency
