関心分野
My background is in law, with an interdisciplinary focus on regulation, particularly in the field of criminal justice. My approach is through a comparative, empirical sociolegal lens.
My current projects include participation in a Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) research grant led by Prof. Jōji (George) Shishido (https://kaken.nii.ac.jp/grant/KAKENHI-PROJECT-22H00041/) on the impact of digitisation and algorithmic decision-making on law and politics. My contribution examines the impact of the digital age on community corrections (probation and parole) in Japan and Australia. I have recently completed a study on the nature and impact of civil prison oversight in Japan and Australia.
Two key insights from my research are Japan’s critical role as a testing site for western legal ideas that have previously been regarded as universally applicable, and the importance of developing a granular understanding of regulated individuals and institutions before attempting a regulatory intervention.
担当授業科目
I teach courses in Japanese law and Anglo-American law as well as practical lawyering skills. This includes the Tokyo Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition, which involves both arbitration and negotiation rounds, and the Global Intercollegiate Negotiation Competition, which involves bilateral and multilateral negotiation rounds.

I serve on the Ministry of Justice Japanese Law Translation Council, and as an expert adviser to the Japanese-English legal translation community, including on plain legal language.
