Precautions against Earthquakes

Earthquakes occur frequently in Japan. You should always take precautions concerning earthquakes.
Your passport and other valuables should be ready to be carried out immediately.
If you have family, decide beforehand where all family members will gather together in case of an emergency. Furthermore, you should verify that you are familiar with the broad-district emergency evacuation area in your locality.
Reserve supplies that will prove to be convenient in an emergency are: water, two or three days’ worth of food (dry crackers, canned food, etc.), a can opener, medicine, a flashlight, a radio and new electric batteries etc. You should keep them in a knapsack that you can carry out at any time.
Even when the first big quake comes to an end, it would be better for you not to enter your house because there are often several aftershocks cases.
Useful Information for Disaster Prevention

In case of an earthquake, please take heed of the following matters:
1. If you are using fire, extinguish it and turn off the gas, etc. at the main source.
2. Open at least one window or door and secure an exit.
3. Move away from windows, etc. so that you will not be hurt by pieces of broken glass.
4. Take refuge under something like a solidly-built desk, or by the side pillar of a door.
5. If you are indoors at the time of an earthquake, do not go out, as there is the danger of objects falling from overhead.
6. If you are outdoors, move to a spacious and safe place.
