2025 University of Tokyo Summer School Report

Attending the Summer School at Todai was a truly enriching and unforgettable experience. The academic program challenged me to think critically about legal systems in ways I had never done before. In particular, the classes on U.S. law opened my eyes to the concept of federalism. While I had previously read about American politics and legal issues in the news, I often found it difficult to grasp the underlying structure of the system. Through our lectures and discussions, I came to understand how power is shared between the federal government and the states, and how this division shapes everything from constitutional debates to everyday policymaking. This insight not only deepened my understanding of the U.S. legal system, but also gave me tools to interpret current events more thoughtfully.
Equally fascinating was the chance to learn more about Japan’s own legal history. I had studied some aspects before, but the program gave me a clearer picture of how the country’s modern legal system developed. In particular, we discussed the arrival of Commodore Matthew Perry in the mid-19th century, an event that forced Japan to abandon centuries of isolation. I was struck by how this encounter opened Japan to foreign trade and influence, shaping both its political and legal institutions in profound ways. It reminded me of how law is not static, but rather shaped by history and global interaction.
Beyond academics, the location of the summer school in Atami made the experience even more special. One of the highlights was attending the spectacular hanabitaikai (fireworks festival). Watching the fireworks over the sea and experiencing summer traditions unique to Japan gave me a deeper cultural connection to the country. Just as importantly, I was able to make many fantastic friends from all over the world. We have stayed in touch through social media, and I already plan to visit some of them when I return to Japan next year.
Overall, I would wholeheartedly recommend the Todai Summer School to anyone interested in exploring law outside their home institution. It combines rigorous learning with cultural immersion, and leaves you with international friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.
